Is Your Caravan Damaged in a Road Accident? This is What You Need To Do
Accidents can have a toll on the victims and it becomes difficult for the victim to think rationally. In fact, they are injured or quite shaken up and they are not able to focus on what needs to be done. Most accidents are not fatal. In fact, the majority of accidents involve a few dents and broken sections. For serious accidents, you need to make sure that everything is safe and check on the fellow travelers. You wouldn’t want casualties to get worse.
Here is what you need to do if your caravan meets with a road accident.
Don’t Panic
The first thing that you need to do is to stop panicking. It will only make matters worse. The event will obviously leave you shaken up, but now is not the time to let it affect you. Get a grip on yourself, take a few deep breaths and get yourself ready to handle the situation.
Check For Casualties
When you have calmed yourself, check for casualties. Don’t limit yourself to only those who are traveling with you. Check the entire site for all possible casualties. If anyone needs immediate medical attention, then alert the authorities.
Cooperate with the Police
Cops will arrive at the accident site soon. Don’t create a problem for them. Cooperate with them and let them assist you in getting over the situation without causing further problem for others. The road needs to be cleared or taped off to prevent further accidents. Injured people will need medical care. The police will be able to help you with all of this as long as you cooperate with them.
Check for Damages to the Caravan
Before leaving the accident site, check the caravan for damages. It is possible that the damages are not serious, but leaving them unattended could make the situation worse. For major damages, get the vehicle towed to a service station so that repair work may be started soon. Consult with the authorities to know whether the vehicle is cleared to be taken to the garage. If not, then complete the formalities as soon as possible.
Check the Health of Your Caravan Awning and Other Accessories
Although it is important to check the caravan, you should not miss the awning and other accessories. There is a good chance that not much damage has been incurred on them. If required, you can always call in your friends or family members to disassemble the accessories and keep them safely. If extensive damage has been inflicted, then you will have to change the accessories. Caravan awnings are prepared for a custom fit so make sure that you ascertain its condition before letting it go to waste.
Notify the Insurance Company to Claim Benefits
Don’t forget to notify the insurance company with supportive documents and evidence to claim the insurance amount. The least benefit that you should get is financial assistance that will be taken care of by the insurance company. If you don’t have a caravan insurance, then make sure you get it as soon as possible. Also, check for insurance covers that include accessories such as caravan awnings and annexes. Not all companies will provide cover for these accessories. But you might be able to find an insurance cover that takes care of that.
How to Prevent Caravan Awning Storm Poles from Bending
If you do not take proper care of your caravan awning, then even the best ones would not be able to withstand the test of time. At times the poles will give away or the fabric may come off. One such instance is where the awning storm poles get bent and they let the draught in. This will obviously reduce the comfort inside the awning, especially if it is a full wall awning, and you will have to bear with it till you fix the problem.
If you have alloy poles, then you will notice that they that seem to give to wind pressure far too easily. The weakened structure bends away from the caravan side and lets draughts through. Now the most probable solution would be to anchor them half way up by clamping the awning fabric to the clip. This will help in preventing a hole from being made.
In my opinion, the best way to do this is to get 2 clips and screw them into the caravan as this will hold the awning poles tightly against the body of the caravan. Make sure that you put the screws with care as miscalculated insertions can lead to damages. You would not want that to happen, would you? You can use the same clips that are used for holding copper pipes in houses.
If the clips don’t have a nice tight fit, then you can apply some carpet tape around the poles to get it really tight. It would be a good idea to measure the diameter of the poles and the clip to understand the amount of tape that would be needed to get a tight fit. It is important for the clip to fit in tightly or else the poles can give in to pressure again. You can also try to add more clips if one or two clips don’t seem enough.
The only other alternative to this (which I feel is really effective) is to invest in a good caravan awning that is durable enough to withstand the elements of nature and is comfortable enough to take with you on your road trips. Check out some amazing caravan awnings and annexes here.
How to Replace Broken Fiberglass Awning Pole Sections
Fiberglass poles are commonly used in tents and caravan awnings due to the perfectly balanced strength and flexibility of the poles. Plus, they are light in weight so they help you to keep the load within manageable limits. But sometimes, these poles may get damaged with broken sections clearly visible along the fault line.
How does one repair or replace the broken fiberglass awning poles in such a situation? Let’s find out.
If the fiberglass pole is broken with shards of the material coming out from the section, then keep away from it. You would not want the sharp parts to cut your hand or leave small fragments under your skin. Trust me, it can be damn painful and with no immediate medical help around, you might have to go through a lot of suffering. It’s better to stay away from it.
Things You Will Need
- Hacksaw (small sized)
- Safety Goggles
- Mask
- Gloves (for extra protection)
- File
- Shock cord
Replacing the Broken Fiberglass Awning Pole Section
- Measure the diameter of the damaged pole and the replacement section. Both should have the same diameter or else the fit won’t be perfect.
- The entire length of the pole will not be required. Measure the length of the replacement pole that is needed and trim off the remaining section. Use the hacksaw for this.
- After the pole has been cut at the measured position, use a file to smoothen the surface. A rough surface won’t allow a proper fit to be achieved. It is important to get a clean cut without any splinters or sharp edges remaining.
- Get a shock cord and tie one end firmly. Pass the other end through the pole’s length and ensure that they are the correct way round. Once it comes out from the other end, pull the cord and make sure that it is tight.
- Adjust the tension of the cord for keeping the two pole sections together. Remember, the tension should be perfect. It should not be too tight or else it could snap. When the tension is checked and adjusted, trim off the extra shock cord length and tie the free end into a firm knot.
Important Tips to Consider
- Try to keep the lengths of the pole section as even as possible.
- Do not use a metal ferrule joiner in the middle of the fixed fiberglass awning pole.
- Mark the pole sections before cutting. This can be done by applying insulation tape or any other tape to mark the place where the pole needs to be cut. Cut gently to avoid creating a rough splintered surface.
How to Resolve Common Caravan Problems
Your caravan is not invulnerable to damages or problems. It could run into one whether it is standing in the garage or on the road. You need to be prepared for resolving the common problems that can occur in the caravan. These general tips should help you to avoid running into trouble and get the issues fixed before they worsen.
Problem: Corrosion in the Frame
Frame corrosions are caused due to bad maintenance and / or storing the caravan in a damp environment. The caravan needs to be checked for dirt accumulations and signs of rust so that the required measures may be taken on time. Clean the caravan regularly and apply good quality wax on the surface. Do not let dirt and mud accumulate anywhere. Also, make sure that it is stored in a dry environment to prevent rust and corrosions.
Problem: Slacking Sides
Slacking sides in caravan awnings are caused due to three possible reasons – badly tensioned awning, awning is too big for the caravan, or the caravan is placed wrongly. In all of these cases, you need to make sure that you get the right caravan awning with the correct dimensions so that it fits perfectly. Check the tension on the poles and correct them as needed. You also need to check that the distance from the lower panel of the awning to the ground is at least 12 cm. This will ensure that the rubber is fully utilized.
Problem: Damp Stained Awnings
Damp stains occur on caravan awing fabrics if it was not allowed to dry completely and was packed away when wet. Stains will appear if the awnings have not been hung up for drying within 2-3 days of cleaning it. Prevent damp stains from occurring by ensuring that the awning fabric is completely dry and is stored in a dry and well ventilated environment. The storage place should have a somewhat even temperature to prevent damp stains from occurring. Also, make sure that you get really good quality caravan awning to minimize the chances of running into problems in the first place.
Problem: Awning Zip is Not Closing
The awning zip runs into problems if the awing has been incorrectly erected or when the zip / stop end is worn out. Try moving the corner pegs to see if the zip starts moving again. Check for other relevant problems. If you feel that you are not able to solve the problem yourself, then contact the awning manufacturer for help and professional assistance.
City Slickers Leave Sydney Lifestyle for their Love of Caravanning
Do you love road trips? I am sure you enjoy the occasional trips and adventures in your caravan. But is your love for caravanning strong enough to encourage you to leave behind your city life and stick to the road? I guess not. But for the Pine family, their calling for a caravan lifestyle was too much to ignore. This is why they traded in their Sidney lifestyle for one that involved a caravan.
If you are assuming that they might have to live with restrictions and lack of comfort, then you need to check out their luxury caravan for yourself. Matt and Kass Pine have let go of their fruitful careers and have hit the road in their caravan along with their two children, five-year-old Luca and three-year-old Sullivan. The family has embarked on a 9 month long caravan tour, as reported by the Caravan Times.
Matt Pine worked as a sports scientist for top Aussie Rules side Sydney Swans, while Kass co-owned Boheem Design in Surry Hills for around 11 years. Both of these are lucrative work profiles that very few people would consider giving up. As of now, Luca is being home schooled by Matt so that he doesn’t have to depend on conventional education methods. Plus, this ensures that his education is not affected by the long caravan tour. Kass also helps out on the financial front by working remotely for Boheem Design on a smaller scale.
“After chatting with my business partner, we agreed I could access equity I had in our graphic design business to purchase our caravan and Jeep, and then it was a case of reducing our debt so we had as little expenses as possible while we were on the road. This prompted us to make the decision to sell our house in Lilyfield. Fortunately we sold at a good time and we were then able to use the profit to make a couple of new investments,” said Kass.
Life on the road can be a daunting task, especially if you have to keep up with your social as well as personal contacts. With proper financial planning and strong determination, it is possible to plan a long caravan trip. As for the Pine family, they have covered a good distance at a leisurely pace with the trip taking them through Townsville, west through the Outback and Queensland, north into Katherine and Kakadu, onwards to Darwin and Kimberley in West Australia.
The Pine family has done what every caravanner wishes to do at some point of time. Despite having a few financial constraints, they were able to pull off a seemingly difficult trip and have absolutely no regrets about it. Probably, the biggest supporting factor for them was their luxury caravan that has the best caravan awning and other accessories on it. Without such additions, it would not be possible to enjoy homely comfort during a caravan trip.
If the Pine family can do it, so can you. So when are you leaving on your caravan adventure? Tell us about it in the comments section below.
Criminals are Targeting Caravan Parks! Is Your Caravan Safe?
The risk of caravan theft is increasing with each passing day. This is not an assumption, rather a harsh reality that seems to pop up every now and then on news and social media. It has become absolutely quintessential for caravan owners to make use of the latest in security systems and measures to protect their vehicle at all times.
In a recent turn of events as reported by the Irish News, “Two caravans have vanished in the space of a week in Co Sligo, as fears grow that the vehicles are being stolen to order and then taken to England to be sold on”. As of now, the thieves are targeting premium caravan models that show up in the caravan parks. The modus operandi is not yet known, but caravans worth €20,000 and €6,000 respectively have been stolen from the area.
This brings to light the serious lack of adequate preparations and security measures due to which it was possible for the thieves to simply take away the caravans without much difficulty at all. Just because you have come on a holiday with your friends and family, you should not let down your guard. Without a second thought, you need to get a GPS tracking system installed on your caravan with adequate measures such that it is not possible to remove it easily. With the GPS installed, you should be able to track the caravan if it gets stolen.
Don’t wait for the caravan to get stolen to implement the security measures. Check out the following tips which should help you to stay out of harm’s way.
- Ensure your vehicle identification number (VIN) is etched on each window. This is a unique code which can be tracked online or by asking the authorities for assistance in this regard.
- Even you are making brief stops on your way, make sure that you immobilize the caravan so that any attempts to steal it may be deterred. Find out about the ways in which you can immobilize the caravan sufficient enough without requiring a lot of time to mobilize it again.
- Take some time out to know the neighbors in the camp site. They can keep an eye out for suspicious activity around your caravan and you can always return the favor by doing the same for them. The thief may be able to catch you off guard, but it would not be possible for them to keep an eye out for everyone in the vicinity and steal the vehicle at the same time.
- Do not leave any valuable items in the caravan when you move away from it. Even though the doors may be locked, there is a possibility that the caravan could be stolen if adequate measures are not taken. In such an event, you could lose your valuables also.
- Keep a photographic record at home of the interior and exterior of your caravan. This would help the authorities to identify the caravan faster and also confirm that it is your own and not a similar model.
- Install security alarms and other triggers which could alert others about possible infiltration attempts.
- Always lock all doors, windows and roof lights. This may be the most basic security measure but it can prove to be a major advantage for you.
While GPS is the most effective method for securing your caravan, you should not miss out on these small yet effective measures. As an additional precaution, consider getting a caravan insurance with optimum cover for the vehicle as well as for accessories such as caravan awnings and annexes. Not all insurance covers will have provision for these accessories. But if you search hard, you will be able to find it. Following these tips could help you to secure your caravan in a better manner
Useful Caravan Accessories that Every Caravanner Should Take on Road Trips
If you travel often and like to explore the landscapes via road, then the caravan is the best option for you. Adding the right caravan accessories and supplies can help you to make your road trip more comfortable and definitely a lot more convenient. These accessories can fit in snugly with the dimensions of the caravan without appearing out of place.
Check out these cool caravan accessories that every caravanner should take on their road trips.
Whether for travelling to your destination or to make you feel more at home at the camp site, here is a selection of caravan accessories that you may find useful:
Caravan Jack
This is an accessory that should not be left out at any cost. If you end up with a flat tyre during the journey, then a caravan jack would not only help you to get the work done properly, but also ensure that the tyre is changed fast. It is better to use a caravan jack because it is designed to work with the specific dimensions of a caravan. Don’t leave this out of your check list.
Weight-Distribution Devices
These accessories help in minimising sway and improving the tow vehicle’s steering and braking capabilities. Properly distributed weight is crucial for properly manoeuvring it on the road. The weight distribution devices attach to the hitch of the caravan without causing distraction from the aesthetic appeal of the caravan itself.
Reversing Cameras
Have you ever faced the stress of reversing your car up to a caravan’s hitch? Using a reversing camera can help you overcome these challenges, especially if you do not have a lot of experience in handling the caravan with a towing vehicle. The angles at which the vehicle and caravan are aligned may not be judged easily. The camera provides direct feed to the driver. This helps in getting an accurate rear view.
Caravan Movers
This is an extended convenience accessory for caravans which allow you to move your caravan into a tight space without the hassle of reversing. Caravan movers are usually operated with the use of a remote control. The driver doesn’t have to be behind the wheels to get the job done. This is extremely benefit if the parking space is in a cramped spot and manual reversing of the vehicle just wouldn’t work out.
Satellite Systems
Having a satellite system installed gives you access to television signals and communication options in most areas. If you get some of the modern equipment, then you wont have to position the dish antenna. The dish positions itself automatically. For those who use a slightly older model may have to adjust the position manually.
Washing Machines
Maintaining proper hygiene can be a challenge when you are on the road. Fortunately, there are washing machines that are compatible with caravans. These not only work with the available electrical backup provided in the caravan, but also include a portable clothesline or line that can be useful for drying clothes.
Caravan Awnings and Annexes
Travelling without a caravan awning or an annexe can never be even imagined, let alone done in reality. These accessories replicate the comforts of home even during road trips and provide a personalized space where you can relax. There are several options available for caravan annexes and awnings including manual and motorized options. Does your caravan have customized dimensions? Dont worry. Just approach a awning / annexe manufacturer or check out some really good caravan awnings for sale online for getting the right awning / accessory for your needs.
How to Get the Best Resale Value for your Caravan
A caravan might be a long term investment for those who like to go on road trips with friends and family. But if one needs to upgrade to a better model or if the caravan has fulfilled its purpose for the owner, then it needs to be sold off. When used caravans are put up on sale, the first question that comes to mind is “What is the condition of the caravan?”
As a caravan owner, it might be difficult for you to tell the exact condition of the caravan if you have not been careful with its maintenance. If you have ignored minor issues in hopes of getting it repaired ‘when you have the time’, then it could reduce the resale value. Most people do not give much thought to the fact that ensuring the value of a caravan isn’t a one day activity. It begins from the time you purchase the caravan. You need to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of your caravan in order to detect problems soon.
Just think for a moment how it would feel to walk into a caravan sale and find scratches, dents, and damaged parts. It is quite off-putting, right? Then it makes sense to put in some effort for keeping the caravan in proper working condition. It doesn’t take a lot of efforts or investment to keep the caravan’s health within appropriate limits. If you love your caravan, then taking care of the things should be easy. You don’t have to do it all by yourself. Take it to the garage for a periodic check up. Learn how to keep the caravan clean from the outside as well as from the inside. If you have caravan awnings or annexes, then you need to know the right way to clean the fabric as well as the supporting structures.
When you are on the road, there might not be a lot of options available for getting your caravan fixed, in case any issues crop up. In such situations, you need to make the repairs all by yourself. Check out popular videos on basic repairs and methods to keep the parts in running condition. You could also attend caravan shows and interact with experts who can help you in understanding the specific maintenance requirements of your caravan and its accessories. Try to find out other caravanners in your area. Hang out with them and share your concerns with them. Maybe they would be able to offer some importance piece of advice.
Keeping the caravan clean should not be difficult. Keep it covered up when not in use and keep checking the roof for debris. Remove the debris and dust after every trip to prevent accumulation. Proper servicing as well as regular cleaning and polishing are key to keeping on top of things. Take out time to inspect every nook and corner of your caravan to detect problems in their early stages. General maintenance such as greasing the moving components, checking the pipelines, inspecting the awning / annexe, etc. Are easy and should be done on time to avoid greater damage later. Dont ignore the aesthetics of the caravan. If you find dents, scratches or other marks, make sure that you get it removed soon.
The last thing that you need to do is to get the right accessories for your caravan. If you have a customized caravan, then make sure that you get accessories that are a perfect fit. Also, keep all the documents and related paperwork updated. This is important when trying to claim insurance in the event of an accident or damage. Keep receipts for any additional equipment fitted. This should help you to provide all the necessary information to the buyer and assist in faster processing of sales documents. Just take precautions and conduct periodic checks to avoid running into long term problems.
This Floating Caravan Will Make You Go WOW
Yes, this is definitely true. You are not viewing a concept. This is an amphibious caravan that not only performs well over land, but it can float. Now you can even explore lakes and rivers that are close to the camping grounds. This particular caravan doesn’t turn heads when it is being towed over land. But the moment it is put in water, it attracts a lot of well deserved attention.
The amphibious caravan is capable of cruising at speeds of up to 5.6mph which is good enough to cover substantial area. With this caravan, you can enjoy a nice day at the lake. At the moment, this may not accommodate a lot of people, but this is definitely a great design to start with. The caravan can be easily lowered into the water by removing a few screws and attachments. The innovative design provides complete freedom for campers over land and in water.
The amphibious caravan weighs 390 kilograms and has a waterproof chassis constructed from fiber glass reinforced plastic. When the caravan is in water, an electric motor is used to power the caravan. The bed that is placed inside the caravan can be converted into benches and the retracting sunroof makes it easy to pull back to soak up sun rays.
The interesting thing to note here is that the caravan does not have provisions for a caravan awning as of now. Although one can argue that when this caravan is deployed in the water, there would not be any need for awnings. Common sense dictates that one cannot setup an awning in the water. But what about the time when the caravan is on the ground? I am sure some consideration must have been made for this.
A traditional caravan awning will not fit this. It needs a specialized awning that will be able to justify the needs be it on the ground or when the caravan is in the water. No matter how complex the design, Australia Wide Annexes can always come up with a custom caravan awning that will not only justify the intended use, but it will have adequate aesthetic appeal as well.

Did You Know About These Amazing Caravan And Camping Hacks?
Caravan trips can be fun and full of new experiences. These trips are best undertaken in groups comprising friends and family members. But you need to make a lot of preparations to ensure that the journey is comfortable. Obviously it would not be possible for you to take everything that you require. This is why we have come up with a list of amazing caravan and camping hacks to help you in planning a comfortable trip.
Burn Sage for Repelling Bugs Around the Campsite
You don’t have to be bugged by those pesky insects any more. Just make a small bundle of sage leaves and burn it. The smoke should drive away the bugs and insects in your campsite. This is a natural deterrent so you need not worry about any ill effects.
Get More Light With Water and a Large Bottle
Don’t have enough light in your annexe or tent? Don’t worry. Just use a large bottle (preferably a 2 litre milk can), fill it with water, and point a light source (such as torch or lamps) in its direction. The light source should be in contact with the surface of the bottle (as shown in the image above) for the light to spread through the water and enhance the luminescence.
Keep Power Connections Away From Damp Grounds
Camp sites usually have powered connections available for use. But you need to establish connection using cables and connectors. When you place these cables on damp ground, the risk of short circuits increases. To avoid any disruptions, just use a bucket and either place the cable on top of the bucket (like shown above) or you may drill two holes (opposite to each other), and pass the cables through the holes to connect them. This would keep the junction above the ground.
Use Soap Shavings for Single Use
Hygiene is an important aspect of any outdoor trip that you undertake. Liquid soaps are great, but you cannot take a lot and you might have to keep shifting the container to make it available for everyone. A better solution is to use soap shavings and keep them in waterproof containers. These shavings offer one-time use and you won’t have to use another wet soap bar that has already been used by someone.
DIY Speakers for Portable Entertainment
Did you know that it takes just two large foam / plastic ups and a cardboard tube to create awesome portable DIY speakers. Cut similar sized holes in the cups. The holes should be of the diameter of the tube. Insert the cups on either end of the tube while ensuring a tight fit. Now make a slit in the tube on the upward facing portion of the tube to let the mobile device fit in.
If you have devices such as tablets that have a wider base, you can use a different tube for that. Place the device in the slot and play your favourite music. The sound will be amplified and you can enjoy your favourite songs without having to worry about powered speakers or amplification.
Add LED Lights for Cost Effective Lighting in Caravan Awnings and Annexes
Caravan awnings and annexes provide completely enclosed spaces wherever you park your vehicle. But how to ensure optimal lighting inside the awning or annexe? These accessories come in minimal as well as full-fledged covered variants. Lighting needs to be managed properly to ensure adequate visibility but without incurring a lot of costs on energy consumption.
When you are on the road, it is important for you to save up as much energy as possible because you never know how long you would have to sustain the energy backup till you reach a charging port. LED lights offer cost effective solutions where you can get good lighting while ensuring low energy consumption and operating costs. These are pretty easy to setup and are available in different colours.
Who Needs Ice-Creams When You Can Make Your Own Campfire Cone
Still pondering over the perfect dessert item to finish off a fantastic camp meal? Put away that box of ice-cream. Make Campfire Cones instead. It takes just three steps to create your own personalized and out-of-the world sweet delights.
- Step 1: Fill regular waffle cones with yummy ingredients such as marshmallows, chocolate chips and fresh fruits. The choice of ingredients is completely up to your taste.
- Step 2: Wrap the cone in foil and bake it in a grill. If you don’t have a grill, then you can heat it over open fire. Now that should not be difficult to manage.
- Step 3: Unwrap the cone while being careful not to scald your fingers. Dig in and relish the flavours of warm and molten happiness.
Still want ice-creams? Yeah, I thought so. Come up with your own Campfire Cone recipe and enjoy these sugary delights to your heart’s content.
Get Floor Tiles for Comfortable Flooring Inside Caravan Awnings and Annexes
You may have the best caravan awning or annexe with you, but you will never be able to find the desired comfort if the flooring isn’t right. Floor tiles are easy to find and they should not pose a problem in terms of installation. The tiles usually come with in-built grooves that attach to the protruding hooks. With these tiles, you can make the surface softer and prevent rising damp from the grounds.
