What is Bushcraft Camping & How to do it in an Effective Way
For all those you are feeling the same, there is one thing that could give you the adrenaline rush back and even higher than ever is bushcraft camping. What is bushcraft camping? For those, you have heard of but never tried and for those who haven’t heard, Bushcraft camping is a camping trip minus everything you carry along. It could be said in some senses that it is exactly opposite of Glamping.

Just like Michael Grylls a.k.a. Bear Grylls, (obviously not all that snake eating and squirrel hunting) but surviving on the minimal resource on a camping trip. Well, all you need to make sure is, you don’t get too far with it.
Bushcraft camping requires skills and the more tangible things it needs are—tools and survival shelters.
Here are very essential bushcraft tools which are a must for camping in the minimum.
Knife
A knife is a very important tool for bushcraft camping as it is a multi-tasking tool which can cut, shell and sharpen. What you should see in a knife which should qualify for a good bushcraft knife are, made of quality steel, should be sharp, functional and durable.
Axe
Another must-have tool is an axe. Bigger than a knife, an axe has similar function but for tasks with a much higher magnitude. The main utility of an axe is chopping firewood, although there can be a couple of secondary uses also like clearing an area of the bushes.
Water Filter
One of the most important elements for survival is water and on a camping trip which requires minimum things, you can’t afford to carry along a huge canister of water. Here comes the camping water filter. It is light to carry and gives you pure water anywhere, anytime you need.
Nylon Rope
A nylon rope is also a multi-utility thing to carry on a camping trip, especially when you are on an adventure like bushcraft camping.
Plastic sheet
A plastic sheet has an exclusive use on a bushcraft camping trip and it is, it serves as a plastic roof on the tent you make.
Another aspect of bushcraft camping is building survival shelters out of resource which is available to you. Here are the steps to build a survival shelter on a bushcraft camping trip.
All you need is:
Frame- The first thing that you need to make before building a shelter is—a frame. A frame is slightly above the ground as sleeping on the cold ground could be really bad. You need to make a frame by using 4 wooden logs with 2 logs placed (securing the 4 corners by tying a jam knot with nylon rope) such that the frame gets off the ground. There can 2 frames piled up to give a better height to the overall structure.
Base- A base is like a bed (platform) which can be made by using saplings that are to be laid lengthwise. Next comes the mattress. To make the bed fluffy, pile up the boughs on the saplings base you have made. The bough would serve as a mattress and provide your back with required cushioning.
Dome- Now it is time for the overhead shelter. A dome structure would be required to be built for overhead shelter. To build it, longer saplings at least with a length of 8 feet would be required, as long saplings are flexible and bend to take shape. Bend the saplings on both the ends of the bed to form a wigwam roof.
Roof- Cover the dome with the plastic sheet, all you need to make sure is securing the plastic. If the plastic is not secured, a strong wind or a heavy downpour would wash it away. There you are, with your handmade shelter that would save you from the elements and that you could call your home on a bushcraft camping.
Labour Day in Australia

Whatever you do on the upcoming long weekend, there is something interesting to know about the history of Labour day in Australia and why every state has a different date for it.
The history of labour day goes back to the mid 19th century. Back then the working hours in a day were 12 and the week had six working days. People started realizing better working conditions that were possible by getting the 12 hours time down to more humane hours. A victory march was held on 12th May 1856 in Melbourne, almost after the march to the Parliament House by stonemasons on 21st April 1856 to push eight-hour working day. In the same year, the state of New South Wales adopted the new work regulation, which was followed by Queensland two years later, South Australia in the year 1873 and in 1874 by Tasmania.
Although Queensland followed the new work regulation in 1858, the Labour Day celebration took place on 16th March 1861. In Western Australia since 1948, the Labour Day is observed on the first Monday in March as the eight-hour day was granted on that day.

5 Unusual Ideas For Valentines Day

Here comes February and with it comes one of the most awaited festivals of the year. Yes, you guessed it right—Valentine’s Day. The lovers’ festival, which it eventually came to be known for (as it is associated with romantic love), was not the primary reason though. It was later in the 14th century that it got associated with the present-day connotation of romantic love.
Today, it is widely celebrated by lovers and has acquired an amorous spirit. Well, the ways of celebrating the day have run-down as much as the popularity of the festival has grown. Here are 5 unusual ideas that we have for you to celebrate this Valentine's day.
1. Camping Trip
Yeah, you read it right, a camping trip on Valentine's day. It is as much exciting as it sounds strange. The most amazing thing a camping trip brings is—excitement. Even if one of you is an adventurous soul, you could talk him/her in for that exhilarating camping trip. Book a spot at a camping ground or just anchor somewhere in the outback, depending on your adrenaline levels, and spend a day and the evening soaked in love. A romantic camping trip is after all not a bad idea.

2. Volunteering
Coming from all the outback excitement to a completely opposite idea, but volunteering on Valentine's day is one thing you would remember for life. There are many charities which organize fundraising events on Valentine’s day like- a soup kitchen, community garden etc., you can pick one such event and spend a day with a noble feeling of giving away.

3. DIY Gift
Gifting is an inseparable part of any festival and so it is for Valentines Day. But this Valentine's, change the way you gift. What could be better than gifting your partner something you made. A DIY gift would not only add the love but also gives you an opportunity to customize it to the best extent.

4. Galentine’s Day
This is a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s with your girlfriends. Picking uptrend in the pop culture, literally Galentine is a portmanteau of Gals and Valentine, a day when girls can celebrate with their best friends a day together. Dedicate a whole day with your girlfriends is a nice way to tell them what importance they hold in your lives.

5. Spa Date
Instead of going to a romantic dinner, how about a spa date? Something very unusual, but a great way to get all cozy in the spa with your partner. Snuggle up and enjoy the sensual date.

Do something really unusual on this Valentine’s that you would remember for your lifetime.
5 Amazing Ways to Celebrate Australia Day
Australia has an interesting history of its foundation day. 26th January commemorates the foundation day of Australia. The 26th day of January marks the day of arrival of the first fleet of British ships in NSW in the year 1788. But it was the 01st day of January in 1901 that Australia was established as a separate country, declared by the federation formed by the British colonies of Australia. It was in 1935 that all the states of the country started to observe the day as Australia Day. Since 1994, the day has been consistently declared as a public holiday across the whole of Australia.

Coming to the present, this year, Australia Day falls on a Friday which makes it Australia Day Long Weekend and there are some amazing ways to celebrate it.
-
Beach Camping
Enjoying the beaches take long and there is nothing like a long weekend to explore every inch of a beach. If you live near to the coast, just hop on your trailer or a car (depends on how much luggage you want to carry along) and ride toward the water. And for those who reside far away from the oceans, a long weekend gives you all the traveling time that won’t hurt for a to and fro trip.
-
BBQ Party
If you are not willing to spend the long weekend or simply want to layback, a barbeque party is a thing for you. Fire up the barbeque in the backyard and smoke up a bacon, sausage or a fish.
-
Australian Open
What could be a better way to enjoy the Australia Day long weekend with tennis. One of the 4 prestigious events of the Grand Slam ㅡ Australian Open is a reason for pride. Sit back and enjoy the Men’s semi-final between Chung Hyeon of South Korea and the World Champion Roger Federer.
-
Cricket
A great way to celebrate patriotism is to play a national sport. Be a true Aussie and don’t just sit back and watch it on TV, get out with a bunch of friends and hit some sixes and fours.
-
Camping Trip
A long weekend definitely calls for a camping trip. Hit the road with your caravan, tag along with your family or friends and go around. A beach, an Outback, a camping site, whichever excites you, make the most of the long weekend.
-
Fireworks
There are fireworks held across the country on the foundation Day and if you are residing in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide or Canberra, you could witness some of the most spectacular fireworks of the day.
Awesome Ways to Have a Staycation
Somethings evolve with contemporary pop-cultural practices. Such things are new and pick trend after a particular event, like- Selfies. Selfies—although was a known practice, it got the popularity what it has today after events like, the group selfie of actors in the 86th Academy award ceremony in the year 2014.
Staycation is one such another activity, that was a result of the pop culture and gained popularity in the late 2010s. A portmanteau, a staycation is stay + vacation, also known by another portmanteau ‘holiday’ (holiday + stay), is a concept where an individual or a family stay at their home and enjoy amusement activities. Staycation or holiday became popular in the US during the financial meltdown of the US economy which started in 2007 and a similar wave followed in the UK in the year 2009 which was apparently the spreading effects of the same economic crisis which made United Kingdom’s currency weak. People started spending vacations at their homes, enjoying cheaper options and saving on holiday expenses.
Although the onset was due to an unfortunate occurrence, staycations have become a worldwide popular leisure activity now.
Here are some amazing staycation ideas for a group or a family that could be really awesome.
Movie Binge- A family that watches movies together stays together. Watching movies could an amazing staycation idea for your family. Although doing only one activity throughout the vacation would not be recommended, it is an awesome experience of binging on movies for a day. If could get a projector and some big speakers, you could make it an outdoor activity.
Yoga- Well, don’t skip reading the suggestion at least. We aren’t asking you to work out on a vacation, of course, you should binge on other desirable things on a vacation but a yoga session could actually overhaul your soul, mind and muscles.
Beaching- Well, obviously, this is viable for the people who live in coastal areas only, cause if you plan to travel to a beach it might cost you and the whole point of staycation would be lost. Although, it completely depends on how far you stay on a beach, if you stay not too far from a beach, beaching could be a refreshing activity. And you know what all can you do in the open area- frisbees, volleyball, sunbathing and the list goes long.
Backyard Camping- The only difference between a full-blown camping and backyard camping is just one—you don’t have a camper in backyard camping, everything else remains the same. Use everything you take along on a camping trip and you won’t miss the outbacks.
Staycation would be a great experience if you know how to have a staycation and that is only possible if you remember to unplug yourself from all the homely pleasures like TV, internet, cell phones, stove-cooked food and everything else that makes you comfortable.

Perils of Night Driving on a Camping Trip

Driving at night has its own perils especially when you are with a heavy vehicle like a camper or a caravan. It is recommended not to drive at night while you are on a camping trip and stay put at your camping spot and enjoy the night. Night driving has its own hassles and dangers, read on to know about them.
Sleep
The first thing that comes to our minds when we plan or think about night driving is—sleep. Nights are for sleeping as it gives our brains the required rest after the long day’s activities. There are whopping numbers from around the world of accidents caused by sleep-deprived driving at night.
No Stimulation
Talking about night driving, what follows it is, no stimulation. Stimulation is any activity that keeps us active like- talking, listening to music etc. Driving at night is already a tiring job and if you do not get stimulation, falling asleep is inevitable. Most of the night drivers do not stimulate themselves and fall prey to dozing.
High Beaming
Most of the people do not know what lights to use when driving at night and make it difficult for traffic coming from the opposite side. High beam in your vehicle is just like the horn, a way of communicating with the traffic or to intimate the oncoming traffic you are driving on a shady single-track road. Using high beam while on a highway, many times cause blackouts which eventually results in accidents.
Roadkills
Night time is animal time. Many animals come out in the dark and cross their territories in search of food and water which they can’t in the daytime fearing the human presence. In this pursuit, the animals cross and stride on roads, which eventually makes them prey to human vehicles.
Unskilled Drivers
Night driving is unusual and so needs more than usual day drivers. As a night drivers, you should have the skills that are required to drive at night. Handing over your camper to an unskilled night driver or probably to a novice to try a hand at, is quite dangerous.
Why Cover Your RV?

You might have a garage to give shade to your car but you might not have one to park your RV in. Having separate garages (or a garage so big that can accommodate both the vehicles) could be parked is not possible for everyone and that is where ‘covers’ come into the picture. You need to cover your RV for the following reasons:
Save from UV Rays
Just like the UV rays in the sunlight damage our skin, they can damage any surface including your RV’s. Prolonged exposure to sunlight, fades the colour of the RV and can cause peeling. By covering your RV with anything won’t save it from the UV rays. Special covers made of the special fabric doesn’t allow the UV rays to pass through thus saving it from peeling and chipping. These covers also prevent from heating up of the interiors of the RV, the temperature inside the RV could surge very if not covered and could damage the interior in the long run.
Controls Moisture
RV covers have a dual function; while they save the RV from the UV rays, they help in controlling moisture in winters. Condensation under the cover is a major problem in winters and can cause mildew and mold. It is very important to have a cover which is breathable and lets the moisture escape through the tiny pores, thus preventing any such undesirable fungi growth. Covers save your RVs from moisture especially in monsoon and severe winters accompanied by snow.
Save from dust and dirt
Accumulation of dust, dirt, sap and even bird droppings is a common thing. A cover helps in preventing the formation of a black streak on the RV which forms as a result of the combination of moisture/dew, sap, bird droppings. A cover could save you from the hassle of cleaning your RV of these black streaks, sap and bird droppings as it is a tedious job to get rid of them.
Better salvage value
Moreover, covers help you in maintaining your RV, which keeps its lustre, colour, and texture intact thus preserving its value, which eventually gives you a good salvage value.
It may take some time to cover your RV and take the cover off every time you take it out for camping trip, but it isn’t it worth doing that? Cover your RV every time and get a better salvage value. Subscribe Xtend Outdoor and get more such amazing RV maintenance tips.
Things to Know About Circuit Breakers and Fuses in Your Caravan
Caravanning can be called, a home away from home and that is because we carry along quite a stuff that you have back at home. And one those things is electricity. Well, practically we do not carry electricity along but our modern vehicles and RVs/campers are designed to provide the electric supply to us.
All the wiring and circuitry work calls for breakdowns and maintenance and so it becomes important for us to understand the anatomy of the electrical system in our caravans.

One of the common problems with the electrical system is the flow of excess current. The excess current can wreak havoc and to save yourself from that, there are fuses and circuit breakers.
Fuses
Fuses are the small metal wires that get heated up and blow up when excess current flows through the circuit and Thus save the devices. Once a fuse blows up, you need to change it. The fuses in your caravan power the lights, stereo and other things which run on DC 12 volt. They are very cheap and has various types, like- automotive fuses, glass barrel fuses and relay fuses. Automotive and glass barrel fuses work similar, the filament inside them burns up and seizes the current flow. On the other hand relay fuses are automatic fuses which trip on overheating (flow of excess current) and get back on when they cool down. They continue to do this until the problem is fixed or the relay burns out. Fuses are easily available at all the hardware stores.
Circuit Breakers
A circuit breaker is an electrical switch that breaks the flow of the excess current by tripping. Circuit breakers are relatively expensive as compared to fuses and are complex to install. Although circuit breakers are safe as compared to fuses and easy to spot (a tripped one) and can be switched back to ‘on’ without any hassle. On the other hand, one can’t make out by just seeing a fuse if it is bad or good. You need to manually check each fuse by either pulling each one out and checking the filament or by a light tester (which actually saves a lot of time and energy). Anyway, if you are saved by a light tester, nothing could save you from the tedious and dangerous (at times when caution not taken) job of changing a blown out fuse.
Both the fuses and circuit breakers are on the fuse panel of the caravan and all you need to do is locate and open it.
Well, now it must be completely clear everything you either were not knowing or wanted to know about fuses and circuit breakers in your caravan. Next time you hit the road on a camping trip, carry along spare fuses, a light tester and needle nose pliers to change a fuse and for a tripped circuit breaker, you just need to switch it back ‘on’.
5 Easy Breakfasts Recipes For Caravanning
Nothing is more important than food for every organism that roams this earth. And probably humans are the only creatures who need the widest variety of food, mainly because we cannot survive eating the same things. The variety of food is available all the time and almost everywhere, albeit there are situations when this variety gets restricted like on a camping trip.
Although camping trips are adventurous and exciting, the lack of food variety doesn’t exactly stop you from planning them, but you sure miss the variety. But not any longer you would have to miss it, as here 5 amazing breakfast recipes for camping which would not only satiate your desires for a delicious delicacy but are also quick and easy.
Foil Packet Blueberry Breakfast

All you need are a few things:
- half cup milk
- 4 eggs
- Half a cup sugar
- Quarter tsp cinnamon
- Quarter tsp vanilla
- 8 slices of bread
- Aluminum foil
- 1 cup blueberries
- Butter to coat
Cut the bread into cubes. Mix milk and eggs liquid. Pour the mixture of milk and egg liquid over the bread cubes. Stir the solution good (not to the extent that the bread turns into a mash). Now put the blueberries into the mixture. Now take the aluminum foil and coat it with butter so that the mixture doesn’t stick to it. Spoon the mixture onto the foil and slowly fold the foil. Now place the aluminum foil on the campfire griller. Let it cook for 20-25 minutes. Take the foil down and open it. And there is your tasty foil packet blueberry breakfast.
Black Pepper Cheddar Biscuit Burger

What all you need:
- 2 cups of flour
- Salt
- 1 and a half tsp of baking powder
- Half tsp black pepper
- 3 quarter cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 3 quarter cup milk
- A biscuit pan
- Quarter tsp of black pepper
Mix flour, baking powder, salt and black pepper. After mixing it well, add the shredded cheddar cheese and toss it. After the mixture is thick enough, add milk to it and stir it well. After a while of stirring the mixture would turn into dough. Now knead the dough and then cut round pieces of half inch thickness. The diameter of the biscuit depends on the size of the biscuit molds of the biscuit pan. Grease the biscuit molds before placing the patty on them. Close the lid of the biscuit pan and let it cook for 20-30 minutes on the camping griller. Once the biscuits are ready, slide them into the buns and your black pepper cheddar biscuit burger is ready. You could also cook mini omelets in the biscuit pan and either sandwich them along with the cheddar biscuits in the buns or eat them all alone.
Toad in the hole
Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- Half a cup flour
- Half a cup cornmeal
- Half tsp baking powder
- 3 Quarters tsp salt
- 2 tsp unsalted butter
- 14 sausages
- 3 tsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp of sugar
- An iron pan
Take a large bowl and mix cornmeal, flour, sugar and baking powder and whisk it good. Now add milk and eggs to the mixture and again beat it until the batter becomes thick. Prepare this batter a day ahead and keep in an airtight box.
Just when you are planning to make the meal, broil the sausages on the iron pan. Now take the sausages out and pour the batter that you had kept in the airtight container and heat it up. Now arrange broiled sausages on the batter and cover the pan with an aluminum foil and let it cook for 15-20 minutes. The toad in the hole is ready to be served hot. Cut it and pour some maple syrup over every serving.
Cinnamon biscuit on stick

A cinnamon biscuit on a stick is probably the least time-consuming camping dish.
All you need:
- A quarter cup ground cinnamon
- Half a cup melted butter
- A can of refrigerated biscuit dough
- 1 cup sugar
- A couple of roasting sticks
In order to make twists, you need to take the canned biscuit dough and roll it around the roasting sticks. Once done, roast it over the campfire. Broiling over direct flames is not as easy as it looks. You need to be careful enough, the biscuit should not be undercooked and at the same time you have to make sure it doesn’t burn. Once they are done, keep the biscuits aside and mix sugar and cinnamon. Spread the melted butter on the biscuit and sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon powder on it.
Pie Iron Sausage Sandwich

Another easiest recipe for a quick camping breakfast is the pie iron sausage sandwich.
What all you need:
- A pie iron
- A packet of bread
- Grated sausage
- Eggs
- Salt and pepper
- Butter
These recipes require very little resources and are great for a camping trip.
How to Jump Start Your Caravan if The Battery Dies Out
Most of the things today run on electricity, either on a continuous supply or on the stored electricity. Electricity is stored in the batteries and these batteries have become a very important part of our lives, being used in our mobile phones, portable speakers, watches etc.
Our vehicles, although run on fuel the rest of the auxiliary functions run on batteries. The worst part of batteries, they die once the store electricity is consumed and that might happen on a camping trip. Well if it happens you need not panic, a jump start would save the day for you.
How to Jump Start a dead battery
The best and the most popular way of resurrecting a dead battery is by jump starting it. All you need to do is a jump start cable and an extra car! Well, you can’t drive an extra car for contingency, but you could always request someone to stop by and help you jumpstart your car.
● Once you have another car, park the 2 cars head-on (with enough distance for the jump start cable to connects the 2 batteries). Now you need to connect the two batteries with the jump start cable. A jump start cable is basically a pair of cables- black and red.
● Attach the red cable to the red (positive) terminal of the dead battery (bad car) and attach the black cable to a metal part (which should not be a moving part and shouldn’t be connected to an electrical component). This would ground the electricity.
● Now connect the black cable to the black (negative) terminal and the red cable to the red (positive) terminal of the good battery (good car).
● Start the engine of the good car and let it run for 2 to 5 minutes and after that start the engine of the car with the dead battery, and there you are.
● Do not shut down the engines and remove the black cable which is connected to the metal piece in the bad car and then remove the red cable from the positive terminal of the battery of the bad car. Make sure these 2 ends do not touch each other while you remove the red cable followed by the black cable from the good battery (good car).
The best alternative to an extra car is a jump starter kit. It is like a power bank of your mobile which you could carry along and jump-start your battery whenever it dies out.
